The Klump estate in L.A.’s Toluca Lake neighborhood takes the sweetest parts of its 1920s origins and mixes them with smart, contemporary updates. The historic home is now on the market for the very 2019 price of $5.5 million.
Toluca Lake is close to the major movie studios and has long been favored by celebrities, so it wouldn’t be a shocker if an entertainment industry player stepped up to buy this local landmark.
The home was built in 1926 by one of the area’s original developers, a man by the name of William Klump. The home remained in the Klump family through the 1970s, and has changed hands twice in the past five years.
A lucky buyer picked it up for $1.8 million in 2013, after it had sat on the market for about two years. That buyer updated and flipped it in 2015 for $3,778,500. It’s unclear if the current owners made further improvements, but the home’s been available at its current price since October.
The 6,425-square-foot home with five bedrooms and 5.5 bathrooms sits on a prominent, half-acre lot.
But the numbers alone don’t tell the story of this historic beauty. Original hardwood flooring runs throughout, and carved wood beams grace the ceilings. There are four fireplaces, some bordered by authentic Calco tile.
The Spanish Revival–style home also features wrought-iron railings, arched windows, and curved doorways. Walls are thick plaster, and the doors and window panes are dark wood.
Outdoors there are olive trees, manicured lawns, dining and lounging areas, a saltwater swimming pool, and a covered kitchen/barbecue area. Also on the premises are fully remodeled guest quarters.
