A little over a year ago, the 8,000-square-foot, four-bedroom, seven-bath condo at 421 Broome Street, complete with private elevator, 4,000 square feet of terraces, and a hot tub, was introduced with a significantly higher asking price of $65 million.
The price was reduced to $59.5 million in November 2018, and then $52.75 million in March 2019. The home reappeared this week with a new broker and a new price tag.
The historic building, which dates to 1873, had many identities before becoming a residential property. It was previously a typewriter factory, a dust removal company, and an art gallery.
Located in the SoHo-Cast Iron Historic District Extension, the building comes with a bit of infamy. Heath Ledger reportedly rented one of the lofts and was found dead in his bedroom of an accidental overdose in 2008.
The building was converted into condos in 2010, and in April 2011 David Matlin, a distressed asset investor, and his wife, Lisa Matlin, purchased the multilevel penthouse for $17.8 million, according to the New York Times. The couple then embarked on a four-year, gut renovation of the unit.
After completing the updates, the couple decided the three-story aerie was too big for their needs, and placed it on the market. Even with a sizable 25% discount off the initial asking price, the home oozes luxury.
