Retired NFL star Vinny Testaverde is ready to hand off his lakefront home in Odessa, FL, once and for all. After spending a couple of years trying to sell the mansion, Testaverde will pass it to auction on April 9 with a starting bid of $2.5 million.
Before the announcement of the auction, the home’s latest asking price was $6 million. Testaverde purchased the gated home on Lake Keystone outside Tampa in 2004 for just under $800,000 and immediately proceeded to make major improvements to the property.
The home was reconfigured to suit an active family lifestyle. It measures 12,800 square feet and has six bedrooms, seven bathrooms, and four half-baths. Upscale amenities were added, including a home theater, game room, dance studio, sauna, full-size gym, billiard room with bar, and wine cellar.
The 6-acre grounds include a tennis-basketball court, heated pool and spa, outdoor kitchen, private golf simulation room, boathouse overlooking the lake, and boat dock with lift. The property is also zoned for horses.
According to the Real Deal, the former quarterback put more than $1 million into remodeling the ground floor of the home in the past 18 months. The report adds that with two kids grown and out of the house and just one daughter left at home, Testaverde and his wife, Mitzi, have decided to downsize.
Testaverde has a long history in Florida. He won the Heisman Trophy in 1986 as the quarterback for the University of Miami and began his long NFL career in 1987 with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. So while he may not be saying goodbye to the Sunshine State altogether, there’s no doubt the Testaverdes are ready to call an auction audible to reduce their property portfolio.
